Atrium Medical accepts Original Medicare for primary care in Midtown Manhattan and is accepting new Medicare patients. Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A and Part B; physician and outpatient primary-care services are generally covered through Part B. Atrium also accepts select Medicare Advantage plans. Medicare Advantage networks vary by insurer and specific plan, so our team can help verify coverage before your appointment. Patients who are new to Medicare can establish ongoing primary care at Atrium, including the one-time Welcome to Medicare preventive visit during the first 12 months of Part B coverage. Eligible patients who have had Part B longer can receive Medicare’s Annual Wellness Visit, along with ongoing visits for medical concerns, medication management, chronic disease care, and specialist coordination. Atrium Medical is located at 160 East 56th Street in Midtown East, and same-day or next-day appointments are frequently available depending on the issue and schedule.
Original Medicare is Medicare administered directly through the federal Medicare program. It includes Part A and Part B. Part A primarily covers inpatient hospital care and related services. Part B covers physician services, outpatient care, and many preventive services. For a primary-care office such as Atrium, Part B is the part of Original Medicare that generally covers physician visits.
Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is an alternative way to receive Medicare benefits through a Medicare-approved private insurance company. A Medicare Advantage plan provides Part A and Part B benefits through the private plan and often includes Part D drug coverage. Provider networks and referral rules may apply.
| Original Medicare | Medicare Advantage | |
|---|---|---|
| Who administers coverage? | Federal Medicare program | Private Medicare-approved plan |
| Core medical coverage | Part A + Part B | Part A + Part B benefits through the plan |
| Doctors and hospitals | Any provider that takes Medicare, subject to Medicare participation rules | Plan network and service-area rules may apply |
| Specialist referrals | Generally not required by Original Medicare | May be required depending on the plan |
| Prescription coverage | Separate Part D plan can be added | Often included in the Medicare Advantage plan |
| Medigap | Can be paired with Original Medicare | Not used with Medicare Advantage |
| Atrium Medical | Accepted | Select plans accepted; verify exact plan |

Turning 65 often changes more than the insurance card in your wallet. Patients may be moving from employer insurance onto Medicare, deciding between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, considering a Medigap policy, reviewing Part D prescription coverage, and checking whether the physicians and hospitals they already use will remain available under their new coverage.
If maintaining access to particular New York specialists or hospital systems matters to you, verify those physicians and facilities before choosing coverage. Atrium can tell you which Medicare coverage we accept and help verify whether your plan appears active, but Atrium does not sell Medicare insurance or select an insurance plan for patients.
Once Medicare coverage begins, new patients can establish ongoing primary care at Atrium. Patients in the first 12 months of Part B may also be eligible for the one-time Welcome to Medicare preventive visit.
Medicare uses specific preventive-visit benefits rather than treating every yearly visit as a conventional routine physical. Atrium can provide the Welcome to Medicare preventive visit and the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit for eligible patients.
| Visit type | When | What it focuses on | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Welcome to Medicare preventive visit | Once during the first 12 months after Part B begins | Medical and social history, preventive screening and vaccine review, risk assessment, basic measurements, and prevention planning | Not a comprehensive routine physical |
| Medicare Annual Wellness Visit | After the first 12 months of Part B; generally once every 12 months when eligible | Health Risk Assessment, personalized prevention plan, screening review, medication review, cognitive and safety review as applicable | Not a routine physical exam |
| Problem-focused or chronic-care visit | When medically necessary | Symptoms, medication changes, abnormal results, chronic disease management, new concerns | Normal Part B cost-sharing may apply |
For the Welcome to Medicare visit and Annual Wellness Visit, Medicare generally waives patient cost-sharing for the covered preventive service when the clinician accepts assignment. If additional medical problems, tests, or services are addressed during the same appointment, those additional services may be billed separately and normal Medicare cost-sharing may apply.
Original Medicare generally does not cover a comprehensive routine physical in the same way many commercial insurance plans do. Do not call the Welcome to Medicare visit or Annual Wellness Visit an annual physical.
As medicine becomes more specialized, patients can have excellent doctors and still end up with fragmented care. A cardiologist may manage one problem, an endocrinologist another, an orthopedist may order imaging, a gastroenterologist may change a medication, and hospital records may sit in several different systems.
Atrium gives Medicare patients a Midtown primary-care home base where preventive care, new symptoms, chronic conditions, medications, laboratory results, imaging, hospital follow-up, and specialist recommendations can be viewed together. Primary care does not replace specialty care. It is where the pieces are put back together.
Choosing Atrium for primary care does not mean leaving the specialists you already know. For patients with Original Medicare, Medicare generally allows you to see any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare. Atrium’s role is to maintain the longitudinal picture, reconcile medications, review outside results, and make sure follow-up does not disappear between separate offices.
Do you consider Dr. Shilpa Paradkar Singh the physician responsible for coordinating your overall care? Medicare allows people with Original Medicare to identify a primary clinician through their secure Medicare.gov account.
Choosing a primary clinician tells Medicare which clinician you consider responsible for coordinating your overall care. It does not restrict you to that clinician, does not change your Original Medicare benefits, and does not prevent you from seeing other doctors who accept Medicare. You can change your primary clinician later.
Many New Yorkers use Original Medicare together with Medicare Supplement Insurance, commonly called Medigap. Medigap is supplemental coverage from a private insurer that can help pay some of the deductibles, coinsurance, and other patient responsibility left by Original Medicare. It does not replace Original Medicare.
A patient may therefore carry a red, white, and blue Medicare card plus a separate card from a private insurer such as AARP, UnitedHealthcare, or another Medigap carrier and still be an Original Medicare patient. This is different from Medicare Advantage, where the private Medicare Advantage plan administers the patient’s Medicare-covered medical benefits.
If you are unsure which type of Medicare coverage you have, bring your Medicare information and any supplemental insurance card to your appointment. Atrium’s team can help confirm how your coverage should be submitted.
Atrium accepts Original Medicare and also participates with select Medicare Advantage products. The current Atrium insurance list includes Medicare products under Aetna and HIP and MediBlue Pathways / Pathways Enhance under Empire and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Medicare Advantage participation depends on the exact insurer, product, network, and member plan. Patients should contact Atrium with the exact plan name and member information so the office can verify participation before the visit.

Patients approaching Medicare eligibility may be comparing Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medigap, and Part D. Atrium can explain which coverage the practice accepts, but Atrium does not sell Medicare insurance and does not select a Medicare plan for patients.
If you want individualized help comparing insurance options, you can use Medicare.gov or speak with a licensed Medicare insurance broker. Before selecting coverage, consider more than the premium. If keeping access to particular primary-care physicians, specialists, or New York hospital systems matters to you, verify those clinicians and facilities under the specific coverage you are considering.
Atrium sees Medicare patients for ongoing Internal Medicine and primary care, including new patient visits, same-day sick visits, medication management, blood pressure and cholesterol management, diabetes care, lab review, preventive care, specialist coordination, post-hospital follow-up, and telehealth when clinically appropriate and covered.

Original Medicare generally does not cover a conventional comprehensive routine physical. Medicare instead provides specific preventive benefits, including the one-time Welcome to Medicare preventive visit and the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit for eligible beneficiaries. Additional medically necessary evaluation and treatment may be covered separately.
The Welcome to Medicare preventive visit is a one-time Part B benefit available during the first 12 months after Part B coverage begins. It focuses on medical history, preventive screening and vaccine needs, risk assessment, basic measurements, and a prevention plan. It is not a comprehensive routine physical.
The Medicare Annual Wellness Visit is a yearly preventive visit for eligible Part B beneficiaries. It centers on a Health Risk Assessment and personalized prevention plan, with review of screening needs, medications, and other preventive issues. It is not the same as a routine physical exam.
