WHAT IS A NEUROMODULATOR?

A neuromodulator is a general class of drug that is approved by FDA for a variety of uses. The three main brands available in the U.S. are Xeomin, Botox, and Dysport – though Botox was the original one and has become the generic term, like Kleenex or Q-tips.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Beneath every wrinkle is a muscle nerve. Neuromodulators work by blocking the muscle nerve’s signals that control its impulses. Injecting small doses of neuromodulators allows the facial muscles to relax, minimizing the look of wrinkles and giving you that smoother, more relaxed look you’re after.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR EFFECTS TO KICK IN AFTER INJECTION?

All three brands – Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin – take about 7 days to kick in. Skin starts to feel tighter; you should see less movement and wrinkling in the injected areas. It can take up to 2 weeks to see the full results. If you have static lines & wrinkles, they may begin to lessen over time and with repeated treatments.

HOW LONG DO EFFECTS LAST?

Effects last for about 3 to 5 months — though every human body is different, and your mileage may vary. Your body metabolizes the neuromodulator over that period and flushes it out of your system as muscle movement gradually returns.

WHERE DO I START?

With a consultation!  You can call the office to come in for one, or we can do it as a televisit. In many cases we can evaluate you, discuss options, and schedule an appointment all at the same time, from the comfort of your own home.  There is a $40 fee for the consultation, but we will later absorb it into the price of the injections.

HOW DOES YOUR PRICING WORK?

Pricing is by unit.  This helps to individualize the treatment to each client depending on their individual needs and desired outcome.  It is $15/unit, though we do offer group discounts and special pricing for referrals. An estimate of the recommended number of units will be given during the consultation.

CAN I KEEP MY MAKEUP ON?

In order to assess your lines & wrinkles and make the injections, skin needs to be clean in the area we’re going to treat. If you wear makeup to your appointment, we’ll need to remove it before your treatment. You’ll be able to reapply it before leaving.

WHAT MUST I ABSOLUTELY AVOID AFTER MY TREATMENT?

No lying down for 4 hours; no exercise/working/massage out for 24 hours; no facials for 1 week.

WHAT IS THE DOWNTIME? CAN I GO BACK TO WORK AFTER MY TREATMENT?

You sure can! The great thing about this treatment is there’s virtually no downtime. You might have small red bumps that look like bug bites at first, but they usually go away within the hour and you can waltz back into work with no one the wiser.

DOES IT HURT?

While it’s pretty low on the pain threshold, we use ice to locally numb the area before we inject.

IS IT TRUE THAT NEUROMODULATORS CAN CAUSE AN EYELID TO SAG?

It can happen, but in our experience, not very often. This type of result is very rare, occurring less than 0.1% of the time. Your Atrium specialists are trained in how to administer services and treatments for the best aesthetic results with the highest level of safety. This undesirable outcome, however unlikely, is fortunately both temporary and addressable.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER SIDE EFFECTS I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?

Headache, minor bruising or swelling at the injection site are the most common but still rare side effects. Others are much less common, but we’re happy to discuss them with you during consultation if you’re concerned.

I'M PREGNANT OR NURSING. CAN I BE TREATED WITH BOTOX & WRINKLE RELAXERS?

We recommend avoiding neuromodulator treatments during pregnancy and while nursing.

WHAT IS THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN XEOMIN, BOTOX, AND DYSPORT?

The main difference between Xeomin and Botox or Dysport is that Xeomin contains just one ingredient: botulinum toxin A. This is relevant as some patients may have developed antibodies to Botox and Dysport. The manufacturing process is also slightly different, which leads to some subtle differences in clinical practice.

DO YOU DO ANYTHING APART FROM THE FACE?

Millions of people around the world suffer from hyper-hidrosis, which is excessive sweating. Botox can be injected into areas with overactive sweat glands (like the scalp, armpits, hands, and feet) to treat this condition. A single treatment can provide over 6 months of relief from hyper-hidrosis.
